Question
Our personality and values are at the core of what constitute our very "being". Research suggest that individual behaviors are greatly impacted by their values. However, within an organizational environment, individual values are often challenged by the culture, and the policy and procedures of that organization.
Organizations are often charged with compromising the values of their employees by engaging in unethical activities. Why do you think some companies go astray and follow unethical or even illegal practices? Is leadership to blame? What might you have to offer any company of your employ?
Explanation / Answer
Answer: There are a number of reasons because of which the organizations engage in unethical practices. Some of these reasons include high competitive pressures, and lack of ethical values in the top leadership. There are different examples where the organizations because of lack of ethical organizational culture have acted in an unethical manner. I feel that it is always because the lack of ethical charter in the top leadership that the organizations engage in such practises. If the leadership is ethical then it is not possible that such incidences may take place inside the organizations. I will suggest any company of my employ that it should develop commitment towards ethics at the top level and select top leaders who have a strong commitment towards the ethical values. The character of the top leadership inside the organization matters the most and the top leadership need to develop an organizational culture based on ethics in order to prevent unethical and illegal activities from taking place inside the organizations.
