Question

A convex lens refracts light from an object placed 66 cm in front of the lens. The focal length of the mirror is + 46 cm. Find (a) The location of the image (b) The magnification of the image (c) Describe the image (real or virtual? Right-side up or upside-down? Larger, smaller, or the same size as the object?) 10. Replace the convex lens in question #9 with a concave lens of the same focal length (though beware the sign!) and again place an object 66 cm in front of the lens. Again find (a)The location of the image (b)The magnification of the image (c)Describe the image (real or virtual? Right-side up or upside-down? larger, smaller, or same size?)

Explanation / Answer

9)

using lens equation

1/f = 1/di + 1/do

1/di = 1/46 - 1/66

di = 151.8 cm

Magnification = M = - di/do = - 151.8 / 66 = - 2.3

image is real, inverted and large

10)

for the concave lens,

focal length = - 46 cm

1/di = - 1/46 - 1/66

di = - 27 cm

M = - (-27)/66 = 0.41

image is virtual,upright and smaller
