Microorganisms are widely used in water and sewage treatment plants. Sewage contain many harmful waste that reduce the BOD (biological oxygen demand of water). Many bacteria are used in sewage treatment to degrade the pollutants present in sewage. For example, Shigella, mycobacterium etc. This is one of the example of application of bacteria in biotechnology. Along with that many bacteria and yeast are genetically engineered to produce various food items. Food items such as bread, cheese are fermented in large scale with the help of yeast, beverages like wine are fermented in large scale again with yeast like Sachromyces cerevisiae . This is an example of biotechnology in industries. Bacteria toxin such as bacillus thrunginesis is used in making bt cotton which is resistant to toxins in plants.

Bacteria like E.coli are used for producing genetically engineered protein insulin which save the life of person suffering from diabetes. Along with that many bacteria and yeast are source of many antibiotics like Penicillum notatum. In this way, micro-organims are used in health care. Many micro-organims are used as bio-diesel like E.coli
