Question
A large aquarium has portholes of thin transparent plastic with a radius of curvature of 1.60 m and their convex sides facing into the water. A shark hovers in front of a porthole, looking at people outside of the tank. (You may make a sketch to help your solution, but the sketch won't be graded!) Take that n(water)=1.33 and n(air)=1.00. If one of the shark's teeth is exactly 45.0 cm from the plastic, how far from the plastic does it appear to be to observers outside the tank? (Ignore refraction due to the plastic.) If the tooth has an actual length of 5.00 cm, how long does it appear to the observers?Explanation / Answer
SOLUTION:
For A), you're on the right track. So you have 1/0.45 + 1/s' = 1, so s' = -0.802m
Now where does the image appear:
Once you have s', you know that magnification is -s'/s. This should give you the new height of the tooth in the image.
