Question

You are given an electroscope, a piece of wool cloth, a dark gray plastic [poly(vinylchloride)-PVC] rod, and a pale white rod of unknown composition. Starting with the electroscope uncharged, or charge neutral, what is the sign of the net charge on the electroscope needle and support when the unknown rod is rubbed with the wool cloth and brought near, but not too near, the disk at the top of the electroscope? Explain your reasoning with the aid of some simple diagrams and written explanations. Keep the with cloth dry by handling it only when you are actually rubbing one of the rods; otherwise let it lie spread out on the table top. Handle the rods by the taped ends only!

Explanation / Answer

If the rod is made up of glass, then it will get positively charged when rubbed with wool, and electrosope would show +ve charge
If the rod is made osf some other material then the wool cloth would become +ve, leaving the rod to be negatve and electroscope shows -ve charge then
