Question

The following values are determined in guard cells and the surrounding apoplast (assume the volume of the apoplast is much greater than the volume of the guard cells. Further assume that the total amount of water that moves into or out of the guard cells and apoplast is small):

A. Which way would water move? At equilibrium, what would the solute potential, pressure potential, and water potential of the guard cells be?

B. Would stomatal opening after equilibrium be the same, greater, or smaller than stomatal opening under the initial conditions? Explain.

D. In response to the change in solute potential, what would the pressure potential and water potential of the guard cells be at equilibrium? Explain why these would or would not change. What would happen to stomatal opening relative to stomatal opening in 'B'? Explain.

I understand how water potential works for the most part, but I really need someone to explain why things are happening the way they are in this specific situation so I can grasp the concept better.

Apoplast -0.80 MPa -0.20 MPa 0.70 MPa -0.60 MPa -0.10 MPa -0.80 MPa

Explanation / Answer

Ans.(A) water will move from apoplast to guard cell.at the equilibrium water potential will be zero bcoz solute potential and pressure potential will be equal in the guard cell.

(B) -if all initial condition are same after equilibrium then stomatal opening also be same.

(c) -on increasing the solute concentration, solute potential increases in same proportion bcoz solute potential is depending on solutions concentration and it is directly proportional to concentration.

D-at equilibrium cell bcm fully turgid and pressure potential is equal to solute potential. On changing the solute potential, water potential and pressure potential also changed. and cell bcms flaccd or plasmolysed.it affect the opening of stomata.
