Question

The idea of inclusive fitness considers fitness to be comprised of an individual’s genes passed on to the next generation directly (by the individual) and indirectly (by the individual's relatives). Equal survivorship and reproduction by which group of relatives would constitute the greatest inclusive fitness for an individual? (Choose 1) A. One full sibling and one offspring B. One offspring, one half sibling, and one first cousin C. Two full siblings and one cousin D. First 5 cousins E. Two parents

Explanation / Answer

Hamilton rule demonstrated when an altruistic gene will be favoured by natural selection and the formula is

rb > c or rb - c > 0

where

c is the cost incurred by the altruist

b is the benifit received by the recipients of the altruism, and

r is the cofficient of relatedness between donor and recipient.

As we know,

Relationship r

self 1

Parent / offsrring / sibling 0.5

Grandparents /uncle /aunt / half sibling 0.25

Cousin 0.125

A) rb = 0.5 + 0.5 = 1

B) rb = 0.5 + 0.25 + 0.125 = 0.875

C) rb = 0.5 + 0.5 + 0.125 = 1.125

D) rb = (0.125) x 5 = 0.625

E) rb = 0.5 + 0.5 = 1

Hence option C has the greatest inclusive fitness for the individual

rb > c

1.125 > 1
