Question
Suppose the 3 F capacitor in Figure 24.10a in the textbook were removed and replaced by a different one, and that this changed the equivalent capacitance between points a and b to 6 F .
Part A
What would be the capacitance of the replacement capacitor?

Explanation / Answer
12 uF and 6 uF are in series and their series combination is given as
Cs = 12 x 6 / (12 + 6) = 4 uF
Cs , 11 uF and R are in parallel and their combination is given as
Cp = Cs + 11 + R = 4 + 11 + R = 15 + R
Cp and 9 uF are in series and their combination is equal to 6 uF which is equivalent capacitance of the circuit
6 = Cp x 9 / (Cp + 9)
Cp = 18 uF
15 + R = 18
R = 3 uF
