Question
Biodesign suggests that the need statement should cover problem, population, and outcome. Answer the following questions for each of the five statements that you need to review. Answers should not be simple yes/no responses and should elaborate how/why you've made a particular determination. 1. Is the problem scientifically accurate? What (if any) assumptions does it make? 2. Does the problem seem like it is worth addressing? 3. Is there a clear target population for the need statement? 4. Is the desired outcome ambiguous? Is it objectively quantifiable? 5. Is the scope appropriate given the resources and time available? 6. Does the need statement contain any encapsulated solutions? note:Given the random assignment of peer reviews, there's a chance you may see a group's statement multiple times or your own group's statement. If this is the case, make sure you still respond to the above questions even if they are duplicate answers
Explanation / Answer
1) Affordable and effective ways for assessing and monitoring is a need of the hour owing to the risks associated with vascular diseases. Since no specific and early symptoms are known to be associated with hypertension, a regular self monitoring system available to the patients at high-risk of the same can help an individual to obtain treatment and greatly reduce the deaths resulting from heart attacks and strokes due to hypertension. People at high-risk of hypertension, ranging from old-age individuals, indivduals with a famial history of hypertension, obese individuals, individuals with excess usage of alcohol and tobacco and certain people with chronic health condition that may result in hypertension can benefit from the outcome of this need statement. But, currently Sphygmomanometer is used to measure the hypertension and it is available at a moderately affordable price. And at present there is no other way to directly measure your blood pressure and the only thing that is left to do is to make the measurement system affordable to everybody. Given the severity of the issue, and the fact that hypertension remains the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality, the need statement is scientifically relevant to certain extent, but is largely unachievable since there is no alternative, affordable techiques available to actually solve the issue.
2) The problem is relevant and coming up with a solution can actually benefit in maintaing the sterility of the samples and reducing the contamination induced by manual sampling. Apart from reducing the physical strain and maintaining the sterility of the sample, a water collection device can be used universally and reused after proper sterilization thereby reducing the costs associated with sampling. The collection system can be easily designed and translated into a device, since proptotypes are already available in the market. Inorder to validate the effectiveness of outcome, a comparison of water analysis by manual sampling and automated sampling can be performed before replacing the former.
3)The need statement is scientifically relevant and patients with lower extemity issues can benefit from the invention. Although the target is a narrow population, provided the availabilty of resources to resolve the issue makes the need statement worth addressing. The proposal is to incorporate a technology that can measure the load being applied. Given the fact that load sensors are already available for use and it can be easily incorporated into the walking assistive devices, the outcome is pretty celar and definitely the target population can benefit from the invention.
4) 3D printing machines are taking over the conventional approaches and is definitely going to expand in the future owing to the revolutionary change it is going to implement in the healthcare by fabricating tissues and organs in vitro . The need statement is scientifically relevant and the invention is important since the proposed bio ink dispensing system can benefit the tissue engineers in designing a range of tissues since each of different tissues seek different environments to grow. The invention can be ambigously used and the output is qualitatively measurable. With the availablity of technlogical advancements, the proposal is translatable.
5) Although, the mechanical properties of a bone graft should be kept on a check, keeping it within 10% of the native bone mechanical properties is not really relevant since the mechanical properties are required for the strength and integrity of the bone. The patient safety and clinical efficacy should be largely determined by the biocompatibility of the bone graft. Given this fact, the proposed statement is not scientifically relevant hence it is not worth addressing.
