Question

I did some work but the magnitude part of the answer was wrong. The direction was right (45 degrees).

Can you point out which part of my calculation was wrong and provide me with the right one

Item 3 Note the arrangement of charges below Making the following assumptions the four charges in the above grid are point charges each charge has magnitude 1.0 nC (nanocoulombs, and note that two are positive and two are negative) the grid spacing is 1.0 cm; all labeled points lie in the same plane as the charges Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric field at point Q

Explanation / Answer

( E,lower -q,Q ) is wrong

The x and y-components are wrong

And so is E,left,+q,Q <----- NOTE the sign.. the x component needs to be negative

The correct values of the electric fields are:

E,lower -q,Q = k*q/(0.02^2+ 0.04^2) < 0.02/sqrt(0.02^2 + 0.04^2) , - 0.04/sqrt(0.02^2 + 0.04^2) >

Similalrly, for

E,right,+q,Q =  k*q/(0.02^2+ 0.04^2) < -0.04/sqrt(0.02^2 + 0.04^2) , 0.02/sqrt(0.02^2 + 0.04^2)  >

Now, solve it.. you will get the right answer
