Explanation / Answer

we need to use an acceleration dependent formula, so we will use:

y=y0+v0t+(at^2)/2

y=71 meters (in relation to the balloon.)
y0= 0 meters (in relation to the balloon.)
v0= -12m/s (why negative?, this is because the velocity is going against the acceleration.)
a= g = 10 (earths gravity.)

t= what were trying to find.

so we will get:

71= -12t +5t^2

now you use the quadratic equation to find .

the answer should be for a:

t= 5.15 seconds

now for the next question, finding the speed at witch it landed.
Now that we know how long the drop was, we can use this formula to find out at what speed the drop ended.

v=v0+at

v= what were trying to find
v0= -12 (same reason as the first question)
a = g = 10
t= the answer from question a.

so you should get:

v= 39.5 m/s
