Question

Two objects with masses of 4.00 kg and 5.00 kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless pulley as in the figure below. (a) Determine the tension in the string. N (b) Determine the acceleration of each object. m/s^2 (c) Determine the distance each object will move in the first second of motion if both objects start from rest. m Find the acceleration reached by each of the two objects shown in figure below if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the 7.00 kg object and the plane is 0.310.

Explanation / Answer

a)   Applying Laws of Newton motion equations -

5 * 9.8 - T = 5a

Also, T - 4 * 9.8 = 4a

Thus, a = 1.088 m/s2

Thus, tension in string , T = 4 * 1.088 + 4 * 9.8

                                            = 43.552 N

b) acceleration , a = 1.088 m/s2

c) distance each object move =   1/2 * 1.088 * 1 * 1

                                                  = 0.544 m
