Explanation / Answer

1) About 7.6 billion people are currently living on the earth.

Median estimation reveals that the world population will reach 9.8 billion by 2050.

2) With increasing population use of different energy resources are also increasing. Fossil fuels, one of the vital sources of energy for humans, are nonrenewable. So, with increasing use of these sources, these are gradually getting finished. Moreover, excessive use of the fossil fuels generate a large volume of greenhouse gases and other harmful gases. These gases are increasing average temperature and degrading the condition of the air and thus causing vital damage to the human health.

3) The book is a textbook for demonstrating the effects of uncontrollable use of chemicals on the environment. In 1950's Rachel Carson turned her attention towards the adverse effects of excess use of pesticides. Silent spring is the result of this concern. In the book she described the pesticides as "Biocides" as their effects are not restricted to a certain pest or organism. The entire book is focused towards the harmful effects of pesticide on the ecosystems.

4) Environmental sustainability refers to the perfect state of harmony, where there is an equilibrium prevailing between the demands placed on the environment and the efforts to its restoration. At present we are eroding the environmental conditions at a very high pace.

5) Use of fossil fuels and use of chemical fertilizers to change the nature of the soil, are two unsustainable practices.
