Three point charges q1, q2, and q3 are placed along a straight vertical line to create a "tripole".At point P, which is directly to the right of q1, the net electric field is exactly zero. We also know that q1 1 uc. P 1.0 cm 1.0 cm 2.0 cm q3 a) The charges q2 and q3 are unknown. The magnitude of charge q3 is unknown, BUT we know it is positive. If q3 is positive, explain why q2 must be negative. (for the following expressions, it may be beneficial to not substitute in the numbers until part (f)) b) write a expressions forthe x and y components of the electric field at point P ONLY from q1. c) write a expressions forthe x and y components of the electric field at point P ONLY from q2. d) write a expressions forthe x and y components of the electric field at point P ONLY from q3. e) Using the previous parts, and the fact that the Electric Field is zero at P, solve for both q2 and q3. f) A charge of value q 1 HC is placed at point P. What is the force on charge q4?Explanation / Answer
a)The field at P is zero. q1 and q3 contributes positive field at P, so in order to have net field zero the field due to q2 must be negative.
b)q1 will have no component of field in y direction.
Ex = k q1/d1^2
c) Ex = k q2 cos(theta)/d2^2
Fy = k q2 sin(theta)/d2^2
theta = tan-1 (1/1) = 45 deg
d)Ex = k q3 cos(alpha)/d3^2
Ey = k q3 sin(alpha)/d3^2
alpha = tan-1 (1/3) = 18.4 deg
