Question

Three point charges q1, q2, and q3 are situated at three corners of a rectangle as shown in the diagram below. Here q1 = +9.00

Three point charges q1, q2, and q3 are situated at three corners of a rectangle as shown in the diagram below. Here q1 = +9.00 muC, q2 = ?9.00 muC, q3 = +5.00 muC. What is the electric potential at the free corner where there is no charge? What charge should be placed at the free corner for the electric potential at the center of the rectangle to be zero? Include both magnitude and sign if applicable.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Vnet = V1 + V2 + V3

Vnet = 9*10^9*10^-6 * (9/(0.025) + (-9/sqrt(0.05^2 + 0.025^2)) + 5/(0.05))

Vnet = 2.69 * 10^6 Volt

b)

Electric Potential at center due to q1 and q2 is already zero.

So, to maintain Zero Potential we have to place charge that is opposite in sign that of q3

so, q4 = -q3 = -5 uC
