Researchers use a variety of data collection methods to ensure that programs are meeting the objectives they set out to accomplish. They also utilize quantitative and qualitative data to assess the needs of a community and determine appropriate programs and interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality of diseases.

For this assignment, assume you work for a public health agency and your supervisor has asked you to assess various aspects (i.e. health behaviors, risk factors, social environment, physical environment, family environment, services, etc.) related to a disease of your choice in your service population. You have decided to use a cross-sectional (one-time) survey to gather your data.

To prepare for this assignment, read chapter 3 of the textbook on planning models and review the Learning Resources for this module. Then answer the following questions.

Identify a planning model that could be used to help determine the needs of the community and provide justification for your selection.

The Planning model that would help to determine the needs of my community is survey. Written survey that is distributed at community meeting or event. The reason for my selection is because this type of survey in this setting will allow for a high return rate compare to surveys that are mailed mostly have a low return rate.

How does the planning model that you selected relate to the Generalized Model?

Select a strategy for conducting a cross-sectional survey (i.e. mail, internet, telephone, or face-to-face) and provide a justification for your selection by outlining the following criteria:

What strategy will you use (mail, internet, phone, person-person) and why?

What type of information is needed?

From whom is the information needed?

Prepare a brief introductory paragraph that explains the purpose of the survey instrument and provides instructions to those who will complete the survey.

Prepare a list of 6-8 questions along with the appropriate response categories. Note: You may only have one open-ended question. The rest should have categories of response (i.e. a 1-5 rating scale, yes/no, ABCD, etc.) Be sure to read CDC Evaluation Brief # 15 for checklist to evaluate the quality of questions.

Conduct a readability test of your survey by using the readability statistics in Microsoft Word (see directions that follow).

Click File tab, then Options.

Click proofing.

Under When correcting spelling & grammar in Word, be sure the Check grammar with spelling is selected by checking the box.

Select the Show readability statistics by checking the box.

Then, when the document is complete, click spell check. Once spelling and grammar check is complete, you should see a box regarding readability (see reading level).

Record the readability statistics.

Do you think your survey is at a reading level that is appropriate for those who will complete the survey? Justify your answer.

If your answer is “no” to the previous question, revise your survey as necessary and report the changes you made here.

Explanation / Answer

1. The relation between survey and Generalized Model

The generalised model shows the relationship between the dependent or a response variable and a set of the predictor variable. Here the data that we collected use the survey methodology.

2. Strategy to use in survey

It seems the person - person or the face to face strategy will work best in this case.

Because when it comes to disease people do not prefer to answer through the mail or through an online survey (internet), many times pieces of information were wrong.

In the case of a Telephone survey, it is preferred to use a large sample size.

So the traditional person - person strategy is the best option.

3. Type of information needed

Here we need to collect a variety of information like :

health status, health issues, knowledge regarding health and risk factors, demographic characteristics, social and physical environmental quality etc.

4. From whom the information is needed :

In cross-sectional studies, pieces of information are collected at a single time either from the whole population or from a representative subset of the population.

But in our case, as the sample size will not be very large so it is preferred to collect the information from the whole sample population.
