Question

In the future people will only enjoy one sport: Electrodisc. In this sport you gain points when you cause metallic discs hovering on a field to exchange charge. You are an Electrodisc player playing the popular four disc variant. The disks have charges of qA = 8.0 µC, qB = 2.0 µC, qC = +5.0 µC, and qD = +12.0 µC.

(a) You bring two disks together and then separate them. You measure the resulting charge of these two disks and find that it is 5.0 µC per disk. Which two disks did you bring together?

A and B

A and C

A and D

B and C

B and D

C and D

(b) You bring three disks together and then separate them. You measure the resulting charge of these three disks and find that it is +5.0 µC per disk. Which three disks did you bring together?

A, B, and C

A, B, and D

A, C, and D

B, C, and D

(c) Given the resulting charge of each disk measured in (b) is +5.0 µC, how many electrons would you need to add to a disk of this charge to electrically neutralize it? electrons

Explanation / Answer

The answer to the question can be stated as follows .. It is quite obvious that when charges have 'same ' sign that is either '+' or '-' they will repel each other , as similar charges repel each other . Other thing is if the charges have opposite sign and then made to come closer will attract , but numerically whichever charge has a higher magnitude will attract the counter charge heavily . here in this case , we are getting :

a) -5.0micro C of charge as resultant which means -5.0*2= -10 microC in total will be the charge so , this case is only shown by: A and B

b) Here these discs are gaining a charge of +5.0 micro C that means any three charges whose sum comes to be +5.0 will be evenly distributed among three charges . So the answer will be A ,B ,C coming together and separated will result in a charge of + 5.0 microC on each charge.

c)For neutralizing we will have no. Of electrons from the following formula where 'n' will be an integral value

That is : Q=ne

+5×10^-6= n ×(-1.6×10^-16)

n=- 3.1×10^10 electrons shall be added to neutralize the disk. The negative sign simply shows that it is electron we are dealing with.
