Question

3rd time asking this question. please don't answer if you are not sure. Everything is correct but part D.

A ball is shot from the ground into the air. At a height of 9.1 m, the velocity is observed to be [v with arrow] = (7.7 [i hat] + 5.9 [j] ) m/s, with [i hat] horizontal and [j] upward.
(a) What is the velocity of the ball immediately after it is shot? Put your answer in unit vector notation.
7.7 m/s [i hat] + 14.6 m/s [j]
(b) To what maximum height does the ball rise?
10.87 m

(c) What total horizontal distance does the ball travel?
22.93m

(d) What is the magnitude of the ball's velocity just before it hits the ground?
16.51 m/s

(d) What is the direction of the ball's velocity just before it hits the ground?
____???? ° counterclockwise from the + [i hat] direction ***answer is not 117.8 or 117.79

Explanation / Answer

Horizontal component of velocity does not change at all and vertical component decreases to 0 at maximum height and then again increases to the same value in the opposite direction.

Hence velocity just before it hits the ground = 7.7 I -14.6 j

And the angle with +i direction = tan-1 (14.6/7.7) = 62.193 degree clockwise

And hence 360 - 62.193 = 297.807 degree counter clockwise.
