Cultural Analysis of Africa

Hofstede's dimensions of culture that influence business in Africa - The Power distance score is low indicating that hierarchy is part of the culture, the power is centralized. The high score of individualism show that the society is highly individualistic. The country is high on masculinity index which means that there is inclination to work and perform. The people are ambitious and assertive. The country is low on uncertainity avoidance which means that uncertainity is prevalent in the society and there is not much efforts to prevent uncertainity. Long term orientation shows that people have lot of consideration for traditions and customs. They do not prefer change. The culture of Africa is high on indulgence which means the society is inclined towards leisure and enjoyment.

World Factbook and Commisceo Global Culture has specific elements of verbal and non verbal communication like they greet each othet based on their traditional greetings and with foreigners they shake hands and maintain eye contact while woman may not prefer to do so. They are punctual and prefer appointments. They prefer personal interaction than telephonic agreements. They do not like confrontations or aggressive negotiations for price.

The five rules of business etiquettes are punctuality, eye contact while talking , appointments, informal talk to break the ice, personal relationships, and no interupptions while talking.

The risks are the people are sensitive. So considerable planning and beforehand communication is required to have successful business relationships and deals. The opportunities are they are willing to cooperate and eager to establish relationships with personal contact. The areas of business that can be adjusted when considering cultural drivers are formal communication, training, behavior in meetings, gifts and consideration for holidays and private time of individuals. The work timings, authority and appearance should be paid attention.
