Question
Use the resources below as well as any additional research to help develop an understanding of the processes of formation.
Formation of hurricanes: Tornadoes: Earthquakes: Tsunami: Volcanoes:
North and Middle America have regions with significant risks to natural disasters ranging from Tornado Alley, Hurricane Alley, Earthquake regions, and Volcanic ranges. 1) Choose a region from North or Middle America that is prone to a natural disaster 2) Identify the natural disaster(s) that impact that region 3) Describe the process of the natural disasterfs) in terms of how they are formed 4) Identify why that region is particularly vulnerable to the natural disasterfs) based on their location, and the processes of the natural disaster formation.
Explanation / Answer
Answer 1: The region I have selected is California which is located on the west coast of North America.
Answer 2: Earthquake
Answer 3 and 4: California sits on one of the most active seismic zones on earth- the San Andreas Fault. The fault is formed by a transform tectonic boundary which means a boundary that has two tectonic plates sliding past each other. The San Andreas Fault is formed where the North American and Pacific Plates slide past each other in opposite directions.
Both of these plates have ‘locks’ which are irregularities in the boundaries that form a number of interlocked zones. These interlocked zones have immense build up pressure and when the pressure is released, the seismic activity peaks causing a series of Earthquakes.
