The case study for this week’s forum is based on the findings of a study conducted in 1996 for the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on ISO 14001. The study consisted of 18 organizations ranging from small to large organizations. The study was voluntary for the organizations and the information that was collected was used to determine how effectively an organization could implement and use EMS based on ISO 14001 during the year of study.Many interesting topic, questions, and points of interest were raised during the study. One interesting topic was based on the organizations conducting their own evaluations, audits, and self reporting. Most of the organizations felt that this part of the EMS program would be better conducted by a third party auditor. This would benefit the organizations to know where they actually stand in the system, compared to rating themselves higher than they really are. The study proved this at the end of the study with its own third party audits of the 18 organizations.

Another interesting part of the case study was the training of personnel to implement the EMS system. Most of the organizations in the study felt they did not have proper training or full understanding the implementation process of the EMS system. To fully implement the EMS system the whole organization has to have buy in form the top down. Some organizations did not want to fully implement the EMS process based on money, dedication of personnel to the process, or not fully understanding the whole process of the EMS system. One thing I found interesting during the study was the organizations with ISO 9000 systems did not use the personnel or processes used in that system in the implementation of the EMS based on ISO 14001.

One of the biggest hurdles for any change in any organization is always based on money. Along with the training of personnel and possibly hiring an individual’s to run the program, organizations need to see the payoff of the change. Many of the organizations in the study did feel that the implementation of the EMS system had benefits for the organization being more environmental friendly, which is good for organizational perception. While this is good for the planet and public relations; many of the organizations felt with a fully implemented EMS based on ISO 14001 they should have less regulation, smaller monetary penalties, or other benefits for the organizations with fully implemented EMS.

I felt the findings of this case study were very interesting. It is always appealing to read about what real companies feel about environmental improvement. While I think most all organizations want to be environmental concuss, it comes at a cost. My hope is that with this study being over twenty years old, the implementation of a quality EMS is much easier, less confusing, and cost efficient for organizations today.

Environmental Management System (EMS) is the recent trend in the arena of environmental awareness and climate variability. Organizations are compulsorily required to implement EMS before setting up the infrastructure as well as after the setup. This will prevent any hazardous influx into the environment. Moreover, sustainable utilization would be maintained. Thus, EMS must be strictly followed and implemented and people must be made aware of its benefits. As implementation of EMS has become much easier and cost effective in the present days, all organizations must take steps to create EMS.
