Question

A ball rolls off a table with a horizontal velocity or 5 m/s. If it takes 0.6 seconds for it to reach the floor, what is the vertical component of the ball's velocity just before it hits the floor? (Use g = 10 m/s^2.) What is the horizontal component of the ball's velocity just before it hits the floor? ground. The ball's horizontal velocity as it leaves the platform is 6 m/s. How much time does it take for the ball to hit the ground? (See example box 3.3, use g = 10 m/s^2.) How far from the base of the platform does the ball hit the ground?

Explanation / Answer

a)

consider the motion along the vertical direction

Viy = initial velocity = 0 m/s

ay = acceleration = 9.8

t = time = 0.6 sec

Vf = final velocity as it hits the floor

using the equation

Vfy = Viy + ayt

Vfy = 0 + 9.8 x 0.6 = 5.88 m/s

b)

along the horizontal direction :

Vix = initial velocity = 5 m/s

ax = acceleration = 0

t = time = 0.6 sec

Vf = final velocity as it hits the floor

using the equation

Vfx = Vix + axt

Vfx = 5 + 0 x 0.6 = 5 m/s
