A set of students was tasked with determining the mass of a meter stick. The first thing they did was hang it to see where it would balance as shown below. They found that the meter stick balanced level when hung from a point 49.5cm from the 0cm end of the stick. They rehung the meter stick so it was suspended from the 40cm mark. To re-balance the meter stick so that it again hung level they had to hang an additional load of 50g from the meter stick at the 26cm mark as shown below. Using this information determine the mass of the meter stick.

Explanation / Answer

T= mass of stick + ( 50 x 10^-3) (9.8)

Taking torque about location of string,

50 g x 10^-3 ( 49.5 - 26 ) x 10^-2 = Mg x 10^-2 ( 49.5 - 40)

50 x 10^-3 ( 23.5) = M (9.5)

m = 0.1236 Kg ( mass of stick)
