Question

A magnetic field is aligned along the positive direction of the y-axis. When inside such field: What is the direction of the magnetic force acting on a positive charge moving along the negative direction of the z-axis? What is the direction of the magnetic force acting on a negative charge moving along the positive direction of the x-axis? What is the direction of the magnetic force acting on a positive charge moving along the negative direction of the y-axis In which direction should a positive charge move in order to feel a magnetic force along the negative direction of the x-axis? In which direction should a negative charge move in order to feel a magnetic force along the positive direction of the z-axis?

Explanation / Answer

1.

i)

magnetic field along positive y-axis : B = a j^

positive charge moving in negative z-direction : v = b (- k^)

force is given as

F = q (v x B) = q ((b (- k^) x a j^)) = qba i^

hence force is in positive x-direction

ii)

magnetic field along positive y-axis : B = a j^

negative charge moving in positive x-direction : v = b (i^)

force is given as

F = - q (v x B) = q ((b (i^) x a j^)) = qba (-k^)

hence force is in negative z-direction

iii)

magnetic field along positive y-axis : B = a j^

positive charge moving in negative y-direction : v = b (- j^)

force is given as

F = q (v x B) = q ((b (- j^) x a j^)) = 0

hence force will be 0

iv)

magnetic force : F = c (- i^)

magnetic field along positive y-axis : B = a j^

F = q (v x B)

c (- i^) = q (v x a (j^))

hence v is along positive z-direction
