Question

An emf is induced in a conducting loop of wire 1.31 m long as its shape is changed from square to circular.

Part A

Find the average magnitude of the induced emf if the change in shape occurs in 4.21 s and the local 0.123-T magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane of the loop.

Eav= Answer in Volts

My answer of 7.5x10^-4 is wrong

Explanation / Answer

Perimeter of square = 4x a= 1.31

a=1.31/4 = 0.3275 m

Area is square = A1 = a2 = 0.32752 = 0.1073 m2

Now, for circle

Perimeter= 2 pi x r = 1.31

r= 1.31/(2x pi) = 0.2085 m

Area of circle = A2 = pi x r2= 0.137 m2

Change in area, A= A2- A1= 0.137 - 0.1073 = 0.03 m2

emf induced, e= B (A/t) = 0.123 ( 0.03/ 4.21) = 8. 69 x 10-4 V
