Question

a) What kind of sedimentary rock occurs above the granite? Sedimentary Rock b) Assume the granite clast (look at the lower image) is the same granite that occurs below the sedimentary rock in the upper image, which is older, the Contact granite or the sedimentary rock? slightly weathered granite c) Note that the slightly weathered granite on both side of the fresh granite. Which is older, the slightly weathered granite or the fresh granite? Why? (Hint: the difference in weathering is probably because of a difference in composition rather than difference in age.) fresh granite Clast of granite in the sedimentary rock found very close to the photo above. What kind of contact senarates the slightly weathered granite from the fresh granite? d) ) Did the granite form above or below the surface of the Earth? How do you know? How did the granite get to the surface where it is today?

Explanation / Answer

a) By seeing the size of the particle composing the sedimentary rock and the sphericity of the particle it looks like the rock is conglomerate.

b) As per the figure it looks like the granite is intruded in the sedimentary rock and as per the principle of cross cutting relationships and principle of intrusion says that intrusions are always younger than rocks in which the intrusion has taken place therfore the sedimentary rock is older.

c) Again it looks like the fresh granite is the intrusion in the older granite therfore the weathered granite is older and fresh granite is younger.

d) As per the figure the contact between fresh and weathered granite is intrusive contact.
