Question

A 920 kg car is pulling a 310 kg trailer. Together the car and trailer move forward with an acceleration of 2.12 m/s^2. Ignore any frictional force of air drag on the car and all frictional forces on the trailer. (a) Determine the net force on the car. magnitude direction (b) Determine the net force on the trailer. magnitude direction (c) Determine the force exerted by the trailer on the car. magnitude direction (d) Determine the resultant force exerted by the car on the road. (Assume that the forward direction is along the +x direction.) magnitude direction

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

part a)

net force on the car = mass of car * acceleration

net force on the car = 920 * 2.12

net force on the car = 1950 N

the direction of the net forcee is forward

part b)

net force on the trailer = mass of trailer * acceleration

net force on the trailer = 310 * 2.12

net force on the trailer = 657.2 N

the direction of the net forcec is forward.

part c)

for the force exerted by the trailer on the car

force exerted by trailer on car = 657.2 N

the direction of fore is backwards

part d)

Fnet = 1950 + 657.2 = 2607.2 N

N = (920 + 310) * 9.8 = 12054 N

magnitude = sqrt(2607.2^2 + 12054^2)

magnitude = 12332.7 N

direction = arctan(2607.2/12054)

direction = 12.2 degree
