Question
A pellet gun fires ten 2.4 g pellets per second with a speed of 420 m/s. The pellets are stopped by a rigid wall. a) What is the momentum of each pellet? b) What is the kinetic energy of each pellet? c) What is the average force exerted by the stream of pellets on the wall? d) If each pellet is in contact with the wall for 0.90 ms, what is the average force exerted on the wall by each pellet during contact? Why is this average force so different forms the average force calculated in (c)? This discussion is closed.Explanation / Answer
Given that
mass of the pellets m=2.4 grams
velocity of pellets v=420 m/s
step;2
now we find the momentum of each pellet
momentum P=mv=2.4*10^-3*420=1.008 kg.m/s
now we find the kinetic energy of each pellets
the kinetic energy of each pellets K.E=1/2*2.4*10^-3*420^2=211.7 J
now we find the average force of steam of pellets
the average force Favg=10*2.4*10^-3*420/1=10.1 N
now we find the average force exerted on wall each pellets
the average force Favg=2.4*10^-3*420/0.9*10^-3=1120 N
