This has to do with the concept of Center of mass.

Now, the system consists of the canoe and the woman.

So, the center of mass of the whole system is calculated from the center of masses of the canoe and woman

Now, as the woman moves towards right, the center of mass of woman shifts towards right. But there is no external force acting on the system(canoe + woman),so the center of mass of the whole system cannot change.
