The ladder rests against the wall at an angle of 60 The upper and lower ends of the ladder rest on frictionless surfaces, with the lower end fastened to the wall by a horizontal rope that is frayed and that can support a maximum tension of only 80.0 N. Rope

Explanation / Answer

a)The normal force exerted on the bottom of the ladder can be calculated as follows:

R = 10 x 9.8 + 1.07 x 10^2 = 205 N

Hence, R = 205 N

b)The tension can be calculated as follows:

considering the moments about upper end,

10 x 9.8 x cos60 x 2.6/3 + 107 x 2.6/2 x cos60 + T x 2.6 sin60 = 205 x 2.6 x cos60

T (2.25) = 266.5 - 42.47 - 69.55 = 154.48

T = 68.66 N

c)The max distance can be calculated as follows:

80 x 2.6 x sin60 = 107 x 2.6/2 x 1/2 + 10 x 9.8 x d cos60

d = 2.26 m
