Question

In an airport terminal, there are two fast-moving sidewalks (8.0 km/h); one carries its passengers south, and the other carries its passengers north. Each sidewalk is 0.45 km long. At the instant a woman steps onto the north end of the southbound sidewalk, a man steps onto the south end of the northbound sidewalk. He stands still with respect to the sidewalk, while she walks south at 4.4 km/h. (a) How long after stepping onto the sidewalks do they pass each other? (Report your answer to the nearest second.) (b) How far does each person travel in that time? (Report your answer in kilometers.) X_man = km X_woman = km

Explanation / Answer

Xmax = 8*t

Xwoman = (8+4.4)*t

Xman + Xwoman = 0.45

8t + (8+4.4)t = 0.45

t = 0.0221 hr = 0.0221*60*60 = 79.56 s

part(b)

Xmax = 8*0.0221 = 0.177 km

Xwoman = 0.45 - 0.177 = 0.273 km
