Question

You discover a new element, which you name "unobtainium." You wish to characterize its electrical properties, so you set up the experiment shown in the figure (it's the shaded rectangular block)... (a) What is the sign of the mobile charge carriers in unobtainium? Which direction are they moving? Briefly explain your answers. (b) How long does it take one charge carrier to drift from one end of the block to the other? (c) If the mobile charge carriers are singly-charged (|q| = e), how many of them are present in this block?

Explanation / Answer

a) mobile charge carriers are electrons and they have negative sign .
electrons always moves from negative terminal to positive terminal of the battery , ie from down to up in the new element block.

b) drift velocity of electron in block,
u = I/(n*A*q)
u = 0.8/(1*4*2*1.6 x 10*-19) = 6.25 x 10^-17 m/s
time of drifting of 1 particle , t = 9/ u = 1.44 x 10^-17 secs

c) no of charges present in 1 C= 1/(1.6 x 10^-19) = 6.25 x 10^18 electrons
so in 1A = 1C/s
so in 0.8 A = 0.8C/s = 0.8 *6.25 x 10^18 electrons = 5 x 10^18 electrons
