Chapter 14, Problem 010 Your answer is partially correct. Try again. The plastic tube in the figure has a cross-sectional area of 3.73 cm The tube is filled with water until the short arm (of length d 0.707 m) is full. Then the short arm is sealed and more water is gradually poured into the long arm If the seal will pop off when the force on it exceeds 7.89 N, what total height of water in the long arm will put the seal on the verge of popping? Number 2.15 Units m the tolerance is +/-2% Click if you would like to show work for this question Open Show Work

Explanation / Answer

F = 7.89 N ; A = 3.73 cm^2 = 0.000373 m^2 ; d = 0.707 m ;

F = mg => m = F/g = 7.89/9.81 = 0.804 kg

density = mass/vol

vol = mass/density = 0.801/1000 = 8.04 x 10^-4 m^3

Volume = Area x Height

Height = Volume/Area = 8.04 x 10^-4/0.000373 = 2.16 m

New height = 2.16 + 0.707 = 2.867 m

Hence, H = 2.867 m
