Question
A counter weight is added on teh right side of the axle such that there is no net torque about the point of support. The disk is spinning with angular momentum Ls in the direction shown in the figure. The gyroscope is mounted on a base plate that can be moved. You grab the base plate and slowly tilt the left side upwards. The axis throught the rotating disk will
Answer is A. Can you please explain this in the simplest way possible. I am so confused about torque directions too.
Rotating disk Counter weight a) Keep pointing in the same direction b) Tilt in the same direction as the base plate c) Tilt in the opposite direction as the base plate. d) Tilt in a direction perpendicular to the tilt of the baseplate. e) None of the aboveExplanation / Answer
Since angular momentum = r*linear momentum=r cross mv
or L=r*mv
dL/dt=torque (F=ma=mv/t)
so when torque is zero
dL/dt=0
L will be constant
Thus, if the net torque acting on the disk axle is zero, its angular momentum will be conserved and continute in its previous direction.
Here the total angular momentum vector coincide with the rotation axis.
