Consider a ball dropped into a vat of fluid. Which of the following best determines the amount of work done by the fluid's drag force? The amount of work cannot be determined. W = Delta U between two points in the vat. W = Delta K between two points in the vat. W = Delta E between two points in the vat. The change in potential energy does not take into account all the work done by the fluid. The correct answer is: W= Delta U between two points in the vat.

Explanation / Answer

Here I am using the notation (as per standard) –

U = Potential Energy

E = Kinetic energy

K = Total energy

So the total work done by the fluid’s drag force = Total change in the energy of the ball

Which means W = delta K

means option (c) is the correct answer.

In my opinion also, option (b) is contradictory because total work done cannot be determined only taking into account of change in potential energy.
