Question
You have a car with the body having a certain mass and the springs supporting the body. When your absorbers were working, the energy stored in the mass-spring system was rapidly removed, but now they are worn out and the car vibrates up and down a great deal. a)If you add several bags of sand in the trunk will the frequency of vibration increase, decrease or stay the same? b) If you replace the springs with stiffer ones, but remove the sand, will the frequency of the vibration increase, decrease or stay the same?Explanation / Answer
As, frequency of vibration , f = (1/2pi) * sqrt(k/m)
where, k = spring constant
m = mass
a) As, bags of sands are added , mass is increased . Thus, frequency of vibration is decreased .
b) As, stiffer springs are used , spring constant is increased . Thus, frequency of vibration is increased .
