Question

3. Each of the following parts involves a comparison of the net electric force exerted on a positive charge +q in different cases. a. In cases A and B shown at right there are two positive point charges +e each a distance s away from a third positive point charge +q. Is the net electric force on the +q charge in case A greater than, less than, or equal +0 to the net electric force on the +q charge Case B Case A in case B? Explain. b. In case C two positive point charges +20 are each a distance s away from a third +20 positive point charge +q. In case D, four positive point charges +0 are each a point +9 distance s away from a fifth positive charge +q. (The angle a shown is the +20 same in both cases.) Case D Case C is the net electric force on the +g charge in case C greater than, less than, or equal to the net electric force on the +q charge in case D? Explain. oPrentice Hall, Inc.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

In case A , the force of repulsion between the two charges +Q is greater than in the case B. It shows that the magnitude of charges +Q and + Q in the case A are Greater than the magnitudes of charges + Q, +Q in case B.

The Vertical components of the net electric force in both case A and case B cancel out each other.

But the magnitudes of the Horizontal component of electric force in case B is Greater than that in case A., since the angle of separation is smaller in B than in A.

So the force experienced by +q in case A is LESSER in case A than in case B .

3b) The net electric force in case D is GREATER than in case C .

This is because the bigger angle with the vertical creates a greater value for the horizontal component of force in case D . The Vertical components cancel out each other .

3 c) in case E the net electric force is GREATER than in case F.

In case F the net electric force is due to the sum of all horizontal components of the forces due to individual charges. That sum is less than in case E since in E the angle is 0 which gives a maximum horizontal component.
