Question

Cutnell, Physics, 10e Assignment nment COLLEGE PHYSICS (-) Chapter 18, Problem 30 GO suppose you want to determine the electric field in a certain region of space. You have a smell and direction of the force exerted on the object by the electric field. (a) The object has a charge of +10.0 pC and the instrument indicates that the electric force exerted ot is 20.0due east what are the magne dean daection of the electric field? bject of known charge and an instrument thet measures the magnitude (b) What are the magnitude and direction of the electric fieid if the object has a charge of -25.o uC and the Instrument indicates that the force is 15.0 uN, due west N1008C 37 PM 04208

Explanation / Answer

a)

Q = charge on the object = 10 x 10-6 C

F = electric force on the object = 20 x 10-6 N

E = electric field = ?

Using the equation

E = F/Q = (20 x 10-6 )/(10 x 10-6 ) = 2 N/C

Since the charge is positive , direction of electric force is same as direction of electric field . hence

direction : due east

b)

Q = charge on the object = - 25 x 10-6 C

F = electric force on the object = 15 x 10-6 N

E = electric field = ?

Using the equation

E = F/Q = (15 x 10-6 )/(25 x 10-6 ) = 0.6 N/C

Since the charge is negative , direction of electric force is opposite to direction of electric field . hence

direction : due east
