Question

Item 8 8 of 11 Part A onstant What is the distance from the top of the block to the water if the water is fresh? A 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm wood block with a density of 720 kg/m3 floats in water You may want to review (Pages 408- 412) Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units d=1 Value Units Submit Previous Answers Request Answer Incorrect Try Again; 5 attempts remaining Part B If it's seawater? Suppose that 1030 kg/m3 Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units dValue Units

Explanation / Answer

(a).

density of fresh water is _water = 1000 kg/m³

F = 0

- (_wood)g(V_wood) + (_water)g(v_wood) = 0

(v_wood)/(V_wood) = (_wood)/(_water)

(10 * 10 * h)/(10 * 10 * 10) = (720)/(1000)

h = 7.2 cm

the distance from the top of the block to the water is 10 – 7.2 = 2.8 cm (or 0.028m)

(b).

density of seawater is _sea = 1030 kg/m³

(v_wood)/(V_wood) = (_wood)/(_sea)

(10 * 10 * h')/(10 * 10 * 10) = (720)/(1030)

h' = 6.99 cm

the distance from the top of the block to the water is 10 - 6.99 = 3.0cm
