30. -13 points KnightCP2 8.P.045. My Notes Ask Your A 5.2 kg mass hanging from a spring scale is slowly lowered onto a vertical spring, as shown in the figure below (a) What does the spring scale read just before the mass touches the lower spring? (b) The scale reads 18 N when the lower spring has been compressed by 2.0 cm. What is the value of the spring constant for the lower spring? N/m (c) At what compression length will the scale read zero? cm Submit Answer Save Progress Practice Another Version

Explanation / Answer

Before the mass touches the LOWER Spring, the Spring Scale reads the weight of the Hanging mass

= 5.2*9.81= 51.01 N

As the Scale reads 18 N

So Loss in Weight = Wight transferred to the Lower Spring = 51.01 - 18 = 33.01 N

As we know

F = kx

Therefore

k = 33.01/(0.02)

= 1650.6N/m

Let the required Compression be X

As we know

F = mg = kX

Therefore

X = mg/k

= 51.01/(1650.6)

= 0.03090 m

= 3.09 cm
