Question

Consider a railroad tank car containing a liquid similar to water. A pump is placed just above the top of the tank car on a platform, and pumps the liquid to a reservoir upstream. The reservoir is almost 8 times larger in capacity than the tank car, and will not empty to further processes until full. Therefore it would be more practical to empty multiple tank cars en masse rather than one at a time. What would be the difference in pressure of unloading one tank car compared to multiple (e.g. five tank cars.)?

This is a conceptual question and does not require quantitative answers. Just help me understand the additional terms, if any.

Explanation / Answer

Pressure of unloading will be same in both case but rate of flow (discharge ) is more when we use five tank car because pressure depends only on the height and density of fluid to deliver which is constant here.
