Question

Chapter 25, Problem 018 The figure shows a circuit section of four air-filled capacitors that is connected to a larger circuit. The graph below the section shows the electric potential V(x) as a function of position x along the lower part of the section, through capacitor 4. Similarly, the graph above the section shows the electric potential V(x) as a function of position x along the upper part of the section, through capacitors 1, 2, and 3, Capacitor 3 has a capacitance of 0.83 . What are the capacitances of (a) capacitor 1 and (b) capacitor 2? 2 V 5 V 12 (a) Number Units (b) Number Units

Explanation / Answer

Given,

E = 12 V ; E1 = 2 V ; E2 = 5 V ; C3 = 0.83 uF

a)The voltage across 3 is:

V3 = 12 - (2 + 5) = 5 V

charge on 3 will be:

Q3 = C3 V3 = 0.83 x 5 = 4.15 uC

We see in the figure that the three capacitors are connected in series, so the same charge will flow through them

So, C1 = Q1/V1

C1 = 4.15 x 10^-6/2 = 2.075 x 10^-6 F

Hence, C1 = 2.075 uF

b)C2 = Q2/V2

C2 = 4.15 x 10^-6 C/5 = 0.83 x 10^-6 F = 0.83 uF

Hence, C2 = 0.83 uF
