Question

Page 12 3a) What is the peak voltage in an ac circuit where the rms voltage is 120 V? 3b) A 150-W lamp is placed into a 120-V ac outlet. What is the peak current? 3c) A 10- resistor is connected to a 120-V ac power supply, what is the peak current through the resistor? 3d) The current through a 50-22 resistor is 1- (0.80 A) sin(240r, where t is measured in seconds. What is the rms current? 3e) The current through a 50-12 resistor is 1- (0.80 A) sin(2400), where t is measured in seconds. How much power on average is dissipated in the resistor?

Explanation / Answer

3a) we know, rms value= 0.707* peak value

peak value= rms/0.707 = 120/0.707 = 169.73 Volts

3b) we know, Power = voltage* average current

average current= power/voltage = 150/120 = 1.25 Amps

now, peak value of current = 1.25/0.637 =1.96 Amps

3c) from ohms law, V=IR

here I= average current

hence, I = V/R = 120/10 = 12 Amps

peak current= Average current/0.637 = 18.83 Amps

3d) rms current = 0.45* avg current

rms current= 0.45* (0.80)sin(240t)

rms current = 0.36sin(240t)
