For this writing assignment, you are required to apply both the theoretical perspectives of sociology as well as identify methods most appropriate to conducting this research. Scan the news and choose a social issue that is of interest to you. As we learned in chapter 1, sociological theories are used to guide research questions when studying society. Review the chart of the three major theoretical perspectives of sociology on page 18. Apply each perspective to the social issue you have chosen, identifying how functionalists versus conflict theorists versus symbolic interactionists would examine this issue. In other words, what questions would a functionalist ask about the social issue you have chosen? A conflict theorist? A symbolic interactionist? Once you have identified the questions, consider which research methods would be most appropriate to use when conducting this research project (refer to the chart on page 40). Choose at least 2 methods and describe how you would conduct the research using both of these methods. Would the data you collect be quantitative or qualitative?
