Question
CONCEPTUAL CHECKPOINT 21-2 A battery that produces a potential difference V is connected to a 5-W light bulb. Later, the 5-W light bulb is replaced with a 10-W light bulb. (a) In which case does the battery sup- ply the greatest current? (b) Which light bulb has the greater resistance? -H Copyright © 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Addison-Wesley CONCEPTUAL CHECKPOINT 21-3 Two identical light bulbs are connected to a battery, either in series or in parallel. Are the bulbs in series (a) brighter, (b) dimmer, or (c) the same brightness as the bulbs in parallel?Explanation / Answer
From R= V^2/W; resistance of 5W bulb is V^/5 while that of 10W bulb is V^2/10. So, the V^/5 > V^2/10 and resistance of 5W bulb is more than that of 10W bulb.
With lesser resistance, the batter supplies greater current. So, current in case of 10W bulb is more than that in case of 5W bulb.
In case of series, both get V/2 voltage and in parallel V voltage. Resistance of them being fixed, Current supplied in series is less than in parallel as resistance is more in series than that in parallel. Now, Energy supplied to any bulb in series= V/2*I1 and in parallel= V*I2; where I2>I1.
Energy supplied V/2*I1<V*I2; So, bulbs in series are dimmer as the bulbs in parallel.
