Question

temp "C Time 7. The graph above shows how the temperature of a substance changes as heat is continually added to it. Each letter represents a SECTION of the graph, with F and G representing the freezing and boiling temperatures of the substance, respectively. a. Which sections of the graph represent a temperature change? b. Which sections of the graph represent a phase change? 3 +D At what point in the graph is the substance exactly half solid and half liquid? c. d. If you knew exactly how much heat was added to the substance in each section of the graph, which section would you use to find the Latent Heat of Fusion? Which would you use to find the Latent Heat of Vaporization?

Explanation / Answer

7. from the graph we can see

a. the portion where the temperature increases with time represent temperature change

hence pritions of graph with non zero slope

hence

portion A , C and E represent temperatuer change

b. when temperature remains constant for a time even though energy is being supplied to the substance, that means the energy is being used to change the pahse of the material

hence

when slope = 0, there is no temperature change hence there is phase change

so phase changes in portions B and D

c. the midpoint of segmet B is the point where the phase change is exactly in between the transition from solid to liquid phase

hence at this point the substance is exactly half solid and half liquid

d. section B corresponds to fusion, D corresponds to vapourisation

hence for latent heat of fusion, section B must be used

for latent heat of vapourisation, section D must be used
