A 2.30-kg box is sliding along a frictionless horizontal surface with a speed of 1.8 m/s when it encounters a spring. (a) Determine the force constant of the spring, if the box compresses the spring 7.00 cm before coming to rest. N/m (b) Determine the initial speed the box would need in order to compress the spring by 1.80 cm. m/s Additional Materials eBook 1 points OSUniPhys1 8.3.WA.037 A small sphere of mass m is launched horizontally over a body of water from a height h above the water and with a launch

Explanation / Answer

(A) Initial KE of box = m v^2 / 2

           = 2.30 x 1.8^2 / 2 = 3.726 J

Block will stop when all KE gets converted into PE of spring.

     k x^2 / 2 = 3.726

     k (0.07^2) = 3.726 x 2

     k = 1520.82 N/m

(B) m v^2 /2 = k x^2 / 2

(2.3) (v^2) = (1520.82) (0.018^2)

v = 0.46 m/s
