Question
In this experiment you will be measuring the resistance of several resistors by measuring the resistance of several resistors by measuring the voltage across the resistor and the current through the resistor at the same time. When carrying out measurments like this, you always have to be careful that youre measuring doesnt effect the experiment too much, or that if it does, you can correct for it. Current actually passes through both the anmeter and the voltmeter. Each device also has an intrinsic resistance. You may want to check out Section 21.4 of OpenStax College Physics.
a) Do you expect the voltmeter to have a large or a small internal resistance? Why?
b) Do you expect the anmeter to have a large or a small internal resistance? Why?
Explanation / Answer
a)
Voltmeter is connected in parallel to resistance. It must not draw any current as it will disturb the current passing through resistance. So it must have large resistance to make current flowing through it close to Zero
Answer: Voltmeter should have large resistance
b)
Ammeter is connected in series. It must not have any voltage drop as it will disturb voltage drop across resistance. For voltage drop to be 0, its resistance must be 0. Getting absolute zero resistance is not possible. So resistance must be small
Answer: Ammeter should have small resistance
