Question

In this experiment you will be using a buret to measure the volume of NaOH solution delivered during each titration that you will perform. Consider the diagram of a buret shown below. The smallest division on this buret is 0.1 mL. What volume reading should be recorded for this measurement? Your answer should be expressed to the correct number of significant figures. In no more than a sentence or two, explain why it is important that you remember to add 3 or 4 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to each of the acid solutions that you will titrate.

Explanation / Answer

P1+(1/2)v1^2 =p2+gh+1/2 v2^2

for P1 =P2

v1^2-v2^2 =2gh........1

also volume flow remains same

A1v1 =A2v2.......A is area

hence v2 =A1v1/A2

hennce

equation 1 becomes

v1^2(1-(A1/A2)^2) =2gh

hence V1 =16.53 m/s

hence volume flow =A1v1 = 3.14*0.0198^2 *16.53 =0.0203 m^3/s
