ID: 1591259 • Letter: P

Question

Part A

Calculate the magnitude of the electric field at one corner of a square 1.82 m on a side if the other three corners are occupied by 3.25×106 C charges.

Part B

What is the direction of the electric field at the corner?

What is the direction of the electric field at the corner?

along the line between the corner and the center of the square toward the center along the side of the square between the corner and one of the charges toward the charge along the line between the corner and the center of the square outward of the center along the side of the square between the corner and one of the charges outward of the charge

Explanation / Answer

here,

side of square , a = 1.82 m

charge , q = 3.25 * 10^-6 C

the electric feild due to diagonal charge , E1 = k * q/(2 * a^2)

the electric feild due to adjacent two charges , E2 = sqrt( (k * q/a^2)^2 + ( k * q/a^2)^2)

E2 = sqrt(2) * k * q /a^2

net electric feild at the corner , E = E1 + E2

E = k * q/a^2 * ( sqrt(2) + 1/2)

E = 9 * 10^9 * 3.25 * 10^-6 /1.82^2 * (1.91 )

E = 16903.38 N/C

the magnitude of the electric feild is 16903.38 N/C

part B)

the direction of the electric field at the corner is along the line between the corner and the center of the square outward of the center
